We have received a number of people in our shop in recent weeks complaining of dry skin, itchy eyes and discomfort from the levels of chlorine present in the Christchurch water supply.  These Chlorine treatments started on April 26, 2018.

“The Council is temporarily treating Christchurch’s drinking water with chlorine while it upgrades the below-ground well heads. Temporary chlorination provides an extra level of protection against waterborne illnesses.”

What are some signs and symptoms of chlorine skin allergies may include:

  • Skin sensitivity such as Skin redness, tenderness, inflammation, and/or itchiness at the site of contact
  • Skin lesions or rash
  • Scales or crust on the skin
  • Hives (urticaria) share some of these symptoms (itchiness and redness), but with raised patches or bumps with well-defined edges. Hives may appear suddenly and may grow in size.

What can you do to support your skin when the water you wash with is causing a skin irritation?

Here are a few of our skincare hacks for supporting your skin during times of chlorine irritation.

1. Get a water filter to remove the chlorine before you bathe, these can be fitted at the tap, at the entry of the water to your home, or on your shower head

2. Get a water filter for your drinking water – The last thing you want to do is become dehydrated. I picked up one from the local hardwear store, and I find I am back to drinking a healthy amount of water again. I really could not stomach the chlorine smell from the water without it.

3. Come and speak to one of your Healthspan pharmacists here at Sydenham Pharmacy about skin allergies for free health advice.

4. Wash your face with purified water:

  1. Use your water filter jug to fill a basin or bowel to wash your face.
  2. Use a mineral water spray like Avene thermal spring water to spritz your face instead of washing with chlorinated water.
  3. Use micellar water cleanser, lotion or cleansing wipes to wash your face.
